We are very excited about our garden this year. Last year we had my brother build us some raised garden boxes, but for some reason nothing grew last year. We think the reason was several factors: it was over watered the first couple of weeks because of a rainy week and also because the sprinklers had a mind of their own and ran everyday when they were only scheduled to come on 2-3 times that week....we also had half of the dirt from a ditch that Parley got from his boss for free and then we added the garden box mixture to it, so the combination could have just been a bad mix for growing veggies...the neighbors cat was constantly digging in the boxes...we planted seeds that needed lots of sun in a spot that got lots of shade (for some reason we forgot to take into account the shade from the tree that we put one of the boxes next to)....and some of our seeds were older seeds. So all of these or some combination of them lead to a garden that didn't grow. It was sad, but ok because we got veggies from family and neighbors.
Anyway, this year we decided that we would remove all of the dirt and start all over again. We mixed 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 compost in each box. We bought new seeds for lettuce, carrots and sugar snap peas. We then bought pre-started plants for our tomatoes, pepper, zucchini, and cucumber plants. Of course right after we planted the neighborhood cat came and dug right where we planted carrots....thankfully it wasn't a huge loss. Here are some before and after pictures of our garden:

Box 1:
This was around June 14th, a week or two after we first planted.

Zucchini, pepper & cucumber this week....
I think they will make it!

You can't see but the carrots are growing towards the top of this picture

You can tell where the cat dug..grrr!

Our 3 rows of peas with the lettuce on the far side
I'm soooo excited that the peas are growing...I can't wait to eat them!
